CTC - Downloading

All the released components of CTC are available by anonymous-FTP from Demon Internet's FTP site at ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/mac/pgp/, or by HTTP for the Java components.
[Don't be confused by the "mac" in the URL. CTClib is not Mac specific. It is just convenient to have all the files together, and MacCTC is Mac specific.]

Signatures are available via FTP (in the same directory with a suffix of ".sig"), or WWW. The following archives are available:-

Common

CTClib

MacCTC

CTCjava

CTCjava uses the GWT library.

N.B. If you aren't sure what "Source Code" is, then it is no use to you.

Keys

The archive are signed with these keys.

Problems

There have been a few of reports of being refused access by the FTP site. I know this site is externally accessible by anonymous FTP. I test it regularly via a different ISP.
If you are having problems, inspect the precise error message returned and if necessary ask your System Administrator, or ISP support department, for help. The message may be hidden away in a log-file somewhere, but it will be available somewhere with the vast majority of FTP clients.
Demon have a page with more details. Regretably their site description is now only available by FTP about the site, so if you are having problem then you probably won't be able to access that either.

Potential problems include:-

The server is too busy

Especially when it is the evening in the UK (roughly 17:00 GMT to 00:00 GMT), the server can get very busy. It has a maximum number of logins. If too many other people are already using it, you will not be allowed in.  The sort of message you will
530-Sorry, there are too many anonymous users using the system at this
530-time.  Please try again later.  There is currently a limit of 196
530-anonymous users.

The server is down

This is not common but can happen, especially on Wednesdays when Demon does its scheduled maintenance. In this case, you will not manage to contact the server at all. Try again later.

No E-mail Address

Your FTP-client is not providing an e-mail address as password. The server does not check that it is a valid e-mail address but it does check that there is an '@' character in it. Demon will not abuse your address, so it is best to provide your real address. If you really don't want to provide a genuine e-mail address, use something like nobody@ or nobody@example.org.
e.g. I tried logging with "/dev/null" as my e-mail address and the server replied:-
530-The response '/dev/null' is not valid
530-Please use your e-mail address as your password
530-   for example: joe@bifroest.demon.co.uk or joe@
530-[bifroest.demon.co.uk will be added if password ends with @]
530 Login incorrect.

Client Misconfigured

Your FTP-client is misconfigured in some way. If this is the case, you probably cannot download anything by FTP from anywhere. Ask your System Administrator.

No Reverse-Lookup

You cannot access the Demon site if there is no DNS reverse-lookup for the IP address you using. (If you don't understand what this means, don't worry. Its a technicality about how your site/ISP is set-up.) If this is the problem on attempting to login Demon will reply:-
530-Sorry, you must allow reverse DNS lookups.
530-Contact your system administrator.
530-
If this is the problem, you probably need to FTP via another machine. This can either be going from another ISP or going via a proxy. Provided the proxy's IP address has reverse lookup you are okay. Ask your System Administrator. If you are looking of a proxy try the following links:-

You should also point out to your system administrator the inadvisability of not providing reverse-lookup. If they question this, refer them to page 289 of "Building Internet Firewalls" by Chapman & Zwicky.

Firewall

You are behind a firewall which won't let you FTP directly. Typically it is necessary to go via a proxy. Ask your System Administrator.
